In this post, we'll take a look at the world's 15 highest earning video game publishers in 2017. A video game publisher is a company that helps finance a game. They fund its production by paying for salaries, licenses, and assets. Video game publishers also handle a game's marketing. They build advertising campaigns to raise awareness of the game, and they help distribute the game around the world.

Tencent Games

Tencent is a Chinese based investment, internet, and technology company with subsidiaries in a wide variety of fields including game. Their games subsidiary, Tencent Games, is the world's largest and most valuable gaming company. They have invesments and controlling stakes in many different video game studios such as Riot Games, Supercell, and Grinding Gear Games. Notable games include League of Legends, Arena of Valor, CrossFire, Clash of Clans, and Clash Royale.

Sony Interactive Entertainment

Sony Interactive Entertainment is the video game subsidiary of Sony Corporation. They were previously known as Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). But in 2016, the divison merged with Sony Network Entertainment to become Sony Interactive Entertainment and the headquarters moved from Tokyo to San Mateo, California. Sony Interactivement Entertainment is best known as the developer of the PlayStation line of consoles, which was first released in 1994. Notable games include Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, and Uncharted.

Apple was never a big player in the gaming market due in no small part to OSX being a relatively niche platform. But because of the popularity of the iPhone, iOS has become one of the largest gaming platforms in the world and Apple has generated billions in profits through games sold in its App Store.

Microsoft is most well known as the software company behind products like Windows, Office suite, and Internet Explorer. They made their foray into gaming back in 2001 when they released the Xbox console. The name Xbox has since evolved into its own brand and encompasses not only various consoles but also games, streaming services, and online platforms. Notable Microsoft games include Halo, Gears of War, Forza, Age of Empires, and Fable.

Activision Blizzard

The company was formed in 2008 through the merger of Activision and Vivendi, which was then the parent company of Blizzard. They helped pioneer online gaming through the, which was the first online gaming service to be directly integrated into the games that used it. Notable games include World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

NetEase is a Chinese technology company that provides a variety of online services including gaming. They are Blizzard Entertainment's partner in China and help distribute their games such as World of Warcraft, HearthStone, and Overwatch. But they also produce their own games. Their most well known, at least in China, is the Westward Journey series of games.

Like Apple, who has the App Store, Google has their own digital distribution service called Google Play that serves as a marketplace for a variety of apps including games. Although Android is by far the most popular smartphone operating system in the world, their users spend far less money on Google Play than their iOS counterparts do on the App Store.

EA is a video game based in Redwood City, California. The company publishes and develops some of the world's largest video game titles including The Sims, SimCity, FIFA, Madden NFL, and Battlefield. Nintendo, based out of Kyoto, Japan, is one of the oldest gaming companies in the world. Nintendo was founded in 1889 as a producer of handmade hanafuda playing cards. In subsequent years, Nintendo made ventures into several unrelated businesses like taxi services and love hotels. But by the 1960s, Nintendo decided to focus on toys and games, which has worked out well not only for their business but also for gamers around the world. The company is most well known for producing the Nintendo series of consoles and for inventing iconic characters like Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and more.

Bandai Namco Entertainment
